Early 19th century enamelled serpent brooch

(Code: A49 )

An early 19th century gold and black enamelled serpent brooch with red spinel eyes and clasping a natural pearl in its jaws,  circa 1815.   The black enamel is very fine and simulates a scaled body. The plain reverse is engraved ‘A. Gayler’. Overall size is 30 x 25 mm.

An entwined serpent or snake is a symbol of eternity, and the pearl of rebirth.
